LPG as a vehicle fuel

LPG is one of the lowest-emission transport fuels commercially available today.

2003 Pan European tests showed automotive LPG offers these benefits over petrol and diesel: report summary

  1. CO2 : 20% less than petrol, 2% less than diesel (ULS).
  2. NOx : 150% better than petrol, 2000% better than diesel (ULS).
  3. Particulates : 99% less than diesel (ULS).

LPG vehicles can be bought ‘factory fitted’ or converted to run on LPG ‘after market’. They can be dual fuel LPG/petrol or dedicated LPG vehicles (LPG only). LPG has a higher RON rating than petrol and therefore offers equivalent vehicle power and performance.

The target market for LPG vehicles in New Zealand is high mileage (40,000kpa+) drivers, most of whom operate in main centres, such as:

  1. taxis
  2. couriers
  3. contractors’ & light commercial vehicles
  4. company fleets, and
  5. large 4x4s

For these vehicles, the financial payback on a conversion can be as fast as six to eight months, after which drivers and fleet operators make significant savings. And as petrol and diesel prices are not expected to drop in the foreseeable future, savings will remain high.

LPG vehicles can be refuelled at around 570 service stations throughout New Zealand.

LPG vehicle technology is state-of-the art with computer-controlled liquid injection systems now available on many vehicles. Click here for a list of LPG vehicle conversion agents.
